PROJECT TO BREED LONG-TAILED RALS
In 2020 and 2021, a project related to animal welfare was carried out in conjunction with the specialised group in animal welfare (FAWEC) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The project was centred on the analysis and improvement/correction of factors giving rise to pig stress in all installations, throughout all phases of the animal’s development.
With this project, the aim has been to improve pig welfare in all phases related to their breeding, allowing them to come to maturity with long tails, without the risk of high rates of tail biting. One of the main conclusions of the project is that the breeding of long-tailed pigs is possible, but that to get to that point, farmers must pay closer attention and spend more hours in observation.
Grup d’Avinyó was awarded Welfair™ certification for its farms and abattoir.
Every year Grup d’Avinyó makes further progress in increasing our animals’ wellbeing. In 2020 we invested more than €1.5 million on various aspects of animal welfare.
Sows and piglets are healthiest and happiest when they are free to interact naturally. That’s why we invested €1 million in improving spaces for sows and piglets on our RBS pig farm to make them more comfortable and to foster the animals’ natural instincts.
We want our pigs to be able to behave as naturally as possible to ensure they have the greatest wellbeing. In addition to taking care of them in properly equipped facilities, we have also created dynamic spaces with materials that make for a more stimulating experience, where they can play, explore, rummage and chomp. These ever-changing, dynamic materials keep them interested and stimulate exploratory behaviour.
All our employees who are in direct contact with our animals receive internal animal welfare training to ensure our pigs are raised under the very best living conditions.
We believe that our animals’ wellbeing extends beyond our farms. Thanks to our strict transport protocols, we can guarantee their quality of life right up until their final moments, as endorsed by our Welfair™ seal of approval.
Grup d’Avinyó constantly strives to improve our animals’ wellbeing and our sustainable production systems. We have signed a number of research agreements with renowned universities, including the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
Grup d’Avinyó was awarded Welfair™ certification for its farms and abattoir. Every day we strive to improve our animals’ wellbeing in every way possible.
"Welfare Quality® and AWIN® are the only protocols endorsed by the Catalan Institute for Agrifood Research and Technology and the Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development. These rigorous systems of control and assessment guarantee that our farms and abattoir follow every single aspect of their animal welfare guidelines."
«The concept of well-being refers to the state of an individual in relation to his environment, and can be measured.»
