ANIMAL WELFARE

COMMITMENT TO OUR ANIMALS

“Working on a project like Ral D’Avinyó is very rewarding, both personally and due to the satisfaction of customers who value the exclusivity and excellence of the products.”

Calm and healthy pigs, growing peacefully and eating at their own pace with natural food.
At Grup d’Avinyó, we take animal care very seriously, which is why our farms and slaughterhouse are certified by the prestigious Animal Welfare Council

At Grup d’Avinyó, we obtained the Animal Welfare certification for both our farms and slaughterhouse.

But how do we guarantee this well-being?
By following the principle of the five freedoms outlined by the Farm Animal Welfare Council throughout their lives:

1 FREEDOM FROM HUNGER AND THIRST

We prioritize individual feeding which provides health and vigor, with direct access to fresh water.

2 FREEDOM FROM DISCOMFORT AND PHYSICAL STRESS

We provide our pigs with a comfortable space to live and rest.

3 FREEDOM FROM PAIN, INJURY, AND DISEASE

Through prevention, quick diagnostics, and appropriate veterinary care.

4 FREEDOM TO EXPRESS NATURAL BEHAVIOR

With enough space, suitable facilities, and the company of other animals of their species.

5 FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND DISTRESS

We ensure the necessary means to prevent mental suffering.

2025

2023

The Ral d’Avinyó breed was created to offer a local, sustainable, and high-quality product. In 2023, R.B.S. implemented the use of straw bedding farms to raise these pigs, improving their well-being and sustainability. This type of farm allows the pigs to express natural behaviors, such as rooting in the ground, similar to what they would do in their natural habitat in search of food.

Straw, in addition to absorbing ammonia and reducing bad odors, facilitates a more sustainable management of waste, turning it into fertilizer. It also helps regulate temperature, keeping the pigs warm in winter and cool in summer, which not only improves their well-being but also optimizes the farm’s energy efficiency.

2021

PROJECT TO RAISE PIGS WITH LONG TAILS

During 2020 and 2021, a well-being project was carried out by the animal welfare specialist group (FAWEC) from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. This project focused on analyzing and improving the factors that cause stress in pigs within the facilities throughout all phases of the animals’ growth.

The objective was to improve the well-being of the pigs at all stages, enabling them to be raised with long tails without the risk of tail-biting outbreaks. One of the main conclusions of the project is that raising pigs with long tails is possible, but to achieve this, the number of hours spent observing and attending to them by the farmers must increase.

2020

At Grup d’Avinyó, we continue to advance in the care of our animals. This year, we have invested more than one and a half million euros in improving animal well-being at various points.

WE SUPPORT A FREE MATERNITY SYSTEM

When mothers and piglets interact in a freer and more natural way, we encourage their animal instincts. That’s why we invested one million euros in our RBS farm. By improving the spaces for farrowing and piglets, we foster their basic instincts and comfort.

WE STIMULATE THEIR ANIMAL INSTINCT WITH DYNAMIC SPACES

Allowing our pigs to act naturally is a clear sign of their well-being. Beyond proper care and suitable facilities, our caretakers have gone further by creating dynamic spaces with enrichment materials. This way, apart from playing, they stimulate other instincts like exploring, rooting, or biting. With these dynamic and changing objects, we constantly maintain their interest and encourage their exploratory behavior.

WE TRAIN OUR TEAM IN ANIMAL WELL-BEING

All our workers who have direct contact with the animals are internally trained in animal welfare. This ensures that our pigs grow and live under the best conditions.

WE CARE FOR THEIR COMFORT EVEN IN TRANSPORT

We believe the well-being of our pigs goes beyond the farm. Thanks to strict transport protocols, we ensure their quality of life up until the very last moment, as certified by our Welfair™ certificate.

At Grup d’Avinyó, we are constantly researching ways to improve both the well-being of animals and our sustainable production systems. That’s why we collaborate and maintain agreements with prestigious universities like the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

WE WORK WITH PRESTIGIOUS UNIVERSITIES

2019

At Grup d’Avinyó, we obtained the Animal Welfare certification for both our farms and our slaughterhouse. We continue working every day to implement continuous improvements in the care of our animals.

WELFAIR CERTIFICATION

Welfare Quality® and AWIN® are the only protocols recognized by the Institut de Recerca i Tecnologia Agroalimentàries and the Basque Institute of Agricultural Research and Development. These rigorous control and evaluation systems ensure that our farms and slaughterhouse strictly follow their animal welfare guidelines.

“The concept of welfare refers to an individual’s state in relation to their environment, and it can be measured.“
