We want a sustainable future, which is why – for many years – we have made responsible use of our water, positively impacting our natural environment.
2024
In response to the drought of this decade and in line with the group’s sustainability policies, in 2024, we made a significant effort to optimize and reduce water consumption in our facilities, especially in the slaughterhouse and tripe processing areas, the two areas with the highest water demand. The installation of internal meters has been essential, as it allows us to monitor consumption in different sections, identify the most water-intensive activities, establish typical usage patterns, and quickly detect abnormal consumption or potential leaks, minimizing waste.
Additionally, we have introduced new cleaning and disinfection protocols, prioritizing an initial dry cleaning process to remove the most significant waste before using water. Thanks to these measures, in 2024, we reduced annual water consumption by 15% in the slaughterhouse and 42% in the tripe processing plant.
2022
Grup d’Avinyó was selected to participate in the REAQUA project to develop a wastewater treatment and reuse project.
Water parameters and reuse will be supervised and authorized by the relevant departments of the Generalitat throughout the project, ensuring the hygiene and food safety of the company.
This project aims to reduce the company’s water footprint, especially important during the current drought and future climate change predictions.
2020
In 2020, we modified the wastewater treatment plant at our slaughterhouse to generate a much cleaner effluent that is more respectful of the environment. This water quality improvement will allow us to continue studying its potential for reuse.
2013
At Matadero Frigorífico Avinyó, we hired the company DepurWater to monitor the proper functioning and implementation of discharge parameters through monthly assessments.
2009
We designed and implemented our first Irrigation Plan, ensuring proper fertigation and setting maximum irrigation hours for each forest and crop plot. In 2009, we also began annual groundwater analysis with the University of Vic to ensure that fertigation does not affect its quality.
2000
We installed a retention pond at the end of the company’s green purification system, with a capacity of 25,000 m³. This allows the water to be exposed to natural treatment for a longer period and facilitates its extraction for fertigation.
1996
We expanded and improved the wastewater treatment plant at Matadero Frigorífico Avinyó, adjusting the quality of its effluent and ensuring its long-term suitability and proper functioning.
1985
We were pioneers in the reuse of wastewater after treatment for fertigation of our 148 hectares of forest and fields surrounding the company. All of this was done under the supervision of the Catalan Water Agency and the Generalitat of Catalonia.
